First Math Lesson Plan Directions

DRAFT DUE: February 18, 2014

FINAL DUE: February 28, 2014

Value: 5% of your total grade

1.  Work with your group to understand the alternative algorithm you have been assigned.

2.  Teach your alternative algorithm to another group via jigsaw.

3.  With your group or a partner and using the departmental lesson plan template, create a DRAFT lesson plan to teach or introduce the alternative algorithm to children.

4. Upload your completed draft lesson plan to Blackboard by Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at midnight.

5.  Andrea will send you back comments on your draft by Friday, February 21, 2014.

6.  Revise your lesson plan based on these comments ON YOUR OWN.

7.  Submit a final version of your lesson plan to Blackboard on Friday, February 28, 2014 by midnight.

Grading will follow the rubric below:

An "A" lesson plan will:

• Have all required elements, which are of high quality and include:
  • Objectives (what do you want students to learn);
  • a detailed description of what will happen during the lesson INCLUDING: how you will (1) introduce, (2) conduct and (3) wrap-up your math activity.
  • some means for evaluating students' learning from your activity;
  • a discussion of how you might adapt this lesson for students facing learning challenges;
  • the CCLS Math Content Standards and Mathematical Practices supported by this lesson (make sure you describe the specific standards and practices; don't just give numbers);
• Be well-written with few grammatical and mechanical errors.
• Demonstrate significant thought and/or creativitiy in organizing the plan.

A "B" lesson plan will:

• Have most of the required elements listed above, which are of high quality OR have all required elements which are of average quality.
• Be well-written with only minor errors in spelling or grammar.
• Demonstrate thought in the creation of the plan.

A "C" lesson plan will:

• Have some of the required elements, which are of high quality OR have most or all of the required elements of mediocre quality.
• Be written satisfactorily with some problems in style, grammar and/or spelling.
• Demonstrate minimal thought in creation of the plan.

A "D" paper will have significant problems and will require a meeting with the instructor.
