First Math Lesson Plan Directions

DRAFT DUE: February 21, 2011

FINAL DUE: March 3, 2011

Value: 10% of your total grade

Note: Most of this activity will be done in class.

1.  Work with your group to understand the alternative algorithm you have been assigned.

2.  Teach your alternative algorithm to another group via jigsaw.

3.  With a partner and using the departmental lesson plan template, create a DRAFT lesson plan to teach or introduce the alternative algorithm to third or fourth grade children.

4. Upload your completed draft lesson plan to eLearning by Monday, February 21, 2011 at mindnight.

5.  Andrea will send you back comments on your draft by Tuesday, February 22, 2011.

6.  Revise your lesson plan based on these comments ON YOUR OWN.

7.  Submit a final version of your lesson plan via eLearning on Wednesday, March 3, 2011 by midnight.

Grading will follow the rubric below:

An "A" lesson plan will:

• Have all required elements, which are of high quality and include:
  • Objectives (what do you want students to learn);
  • a detailed description of what will happen during the lesson INCLUDING: how you will (1) introduce, (2) conduct and (3) wrap-up your math activity.
  • some means for evaluating students' learning from your activity;
  • a discussion of how you might adapt this lesson for students facing learning challenges;
  • the NYS Math Learning Standards (both Process and Content) supported by this lesson (make sure you describe the specific performance indicators related to each standard; don't just give numbers);
• Be well-written with few grammatical and mechanical errors.
• Demonstrate significant thought and/or creativitiy in organizing the plan.

A "B" lesson plan will:

• Have most of the required elements listed above, which are of high quality OR have all required elements which are of average quality.
• Be well-written with only minor errors in spelling or grammar.
• Demonstrate thought in the creation of the plan.

A "C" lesson plan will:

• Have some of the required elements, which are of high quality OR have most or all of the required elements of mediocre quality.
• Be written satisfactorily with some problems in style, grammar and/or spelling.
• Demonstrate minimal thought in creation of the plan.

A "D" paper will have significant problems and will require a meeting with the instructor.
