The basic source for the material is Donald Lines Jacobus. I have reorganized the format extensively, most notably by using a modified Henry System and by moving the footnotes into the body of the text. Since Jacobus' notes were originally footnotes so as not to interfere with the flow of the text, I have presented them in a softer color so that your eye will find it easier to "read around" them if that is your wish. Also, I have added a considerable amount of data. Where material has been added I have attempted to note it and/or to cite the source.

Notes and supplementary material are identified as from Donald Lines Jacobus (DLJ), Eugene R. Wooster (ERW), or Kenneth Jennings Wooster (KJW).

An online presentation (and adaptation/extension) of:

Edward Wooster of Derby, Connecticut, and some of his Descendants

By Donald Lines Jacobus, M.A., of Mount Carmel, Connecticut

==Jacobus' Introduction=======================================================

An account of Edward Wooster of Derby, Connecticut, with a fragmentary record of
his family, appears in the "History of Derby," by Samuel Orcutt, published at Springfield,
Massachusetts, in 1880, pages 780-784. The "Genealogy of the Woosters in America," by
David Wooster, M.D., San Francisco, California, 1885, although it presents valuable
biographical material relative to certain members of the family, is generally very incomplete
and inaccurate. An article entitled "The Wooster Family," by Holdridge Ozro Collins of
Los Angeles, California, which appeared in the New York Genealogical and Biographical
Record, vol. 30, pages 242-247, and vol. 31, pages 39-47, perpetuates all the errors made
by Orcutt and, with the exception of the descendants of Walter Wooster (vide infra 10 vii.),
[KJW note: That translates to "see below: No. 1817" in the Henry System being used in
this online version.] adds little to previous accounts. "Seymour Past and Present," by Messrs.
Campbell, Sharp and Basset, Seymour, Connecticut, 1902, pages 599-605, follow Orcutt's
account for the earlier generations, but adds considerable material relative to Seymour
branches of the family. An article entitled "The British House of Worcester in America," by
Mary S. Austin, published in The Connecticut Magazine, vol. 12, pages 81 et seq., 337 et seq.,
gives a romantically colored account of Edward Wooster and early days in Derby, based on
printed sources. Two pages (243, 244), containing no additional material, are devoted to
this family in the "Descendants of Rev. William Worcester," by Sarah Alice Worcester,
Boston, 1914.
Although the prominence of this family has caused so much to be written concerning it,
it is apparent that, aside from the exceptions noted above, very little independent research
has been made since Orcutt published his "History of Derby." The errors made by Orcutt have
been followed by his successors. No one of these publications presents the material that is
to be found in the church and land records of Derby, and their accounts of the branches of
the family which did not reside at Derby are confused and conflicting. It is the purpose of
the compiler of the following account to correct the inaccuracies of these publications and
to set forth the lines omitted therein.

[DLJ note: The compiler acknowledges his indebtedness to George Clarke Bryant, B.A., LL.B.,
of Ansonia, Connecticut, for much valuable information relating to the Wooster family.]

==1st generation=====Edward, the founder=======================================

1

Edward Wooster, whose origin is unknown, [DLJ note: It has been suggested in all seriousness that he sprang from the marquises of Wooster. The surname of this English house, which was of Plantagenet descent in the male (illegitimate) line, was Somerset; and, in accord with English custom, only the illegitimate offspring would assume the title as a surname. The suggestion has also been made, but without proof, that he was related to Rev. William Worcester of Salisbury, Massachusetts.] was of Derby, Connecticut, [DLJ note: All places mentioned in this article are situated within the present limits of the State of Connecticut, unless another State or region is indicated in the text or may be easily inferred from the context.] and died there 8 July 1689. He married first ------- -------; [DLJ note: Orcutt's suggestion that she was related to Francis French of Derby has been amplified in subsequent accounts, some of which state that she was Elizabeth French. It is more likely that she was sister of Thomas Langdon, for whom Edward's eldest son may have been named.] and secondly TABITHA TOMLINSON, daughter of Henry and Alice of Stratford. She married secondly, about 1690, as his second wife, Dr. John Hull of Derby, and died in 1691. In 1651 Edward Wooster obtained permission from the town of Milford to settle in the northern part of the township, then known as Paugasset. Within the next year or two he and his brother-in-law, Thomas Langdon, [DLJ note: Thomas Langdon spoke of "his brother Woster" (New Haven Historical Society's Ancient Record Series, vol. 1, p. 173).] built houses at Paugasset, thus founding what became in 1675 the town of Derby. The growing village at Paugasset was not viewed with favor by the authorities at Milford and New Haven, and occasional lawlessness on the part of some of the villagers intensified their disapproval. In this situation Edward Wooster conducted himself with prudence, for in 1669 the General Court appointed him constable in Paugasset. His social position is indicated by the fact that at least one record refers to him as "goodman." Children by first wife: 11 Elizabeth 12 Mary 13 Thomas 14 Edward 15 David Children by second wife: 16 Henry 17 Ruth 18 Timothy 19 Abraham 1A Hannah 1B Sylvester 1C Tabitha 1D Jonas 1E Ebenezer [DLJ note: Orcutt's History of Derby, followed by all subsequent accounts, states that Edward's second marriage occurred in 1669. The marriage has not been found on record in Derby, Milford, or Stratford. It would seem that Orcutt accepted the date of Tabitha Wooster's admission to the church as the date of her marriage. "Tabitha wife of Edward Wooster was added to the church" in Milford on 27 June 1669; and since Henry and Ruth were baptized one week later as the children of Sister Wooster, they were presumably her own children. "Edward Worcester" did not join the church until 27 December 1669; and, since Edward and David were baptized thereafter as children of Brother Edward Worcester, they were presumably his children by his former wife. Since the eldest son, Thomas, married a sister of his stepmother's, he and his two elder sisters were certainly children of the first wife. Heretofore Timothy has always been given as the eldest child of the second wife, and Abraham has always been erroneously assigned to the first wife. Further evidence favoring the division made above is found in the name Henry, which was also the name of Tabitha's father.] ==2nd generation=====Children of Edward========================================

11

Elizabeth Wooster, married at Stratford 16 November 1671 COL. EBENEZER JOHNSON, who died at Derby 18 September 1726, aged 81, son of Peter of Fairfield. He married (2) at Derby, 23 November 1676, Hannah -------, [DLJ note: The marriage record entirely omits the name of the bride. Her first name appears in subsequent records. Her surname has been given positively as Tomlinson (Seymour Past and Present, p. 489), an error which probably originated with Orcutt (History of Derby, p. 738). Inconclusive evidence indicated that she was daughter of Richard Holbrook of Milford.] by whom he had eight children. Only child: 111 Elizabeth

12

Mary Wooster, b. 2 November 1654; died young.

13

Lieutenant Thomas Wooster, of Derby, born about 1656, died 9 January 1712/13. He married PHEBE TOMLINSON, born at Stratford 14 August 1656, died in March 1739/40, daughter of Henry and Alice and sister of his stepmother. In October 1706, being then a sergeant, he was commissioned lieutenant of the trainband in Derby. Children: 131 Phebe 132 Alice 133 Zerviah 134 Elizabeth 135 Alice 136 Thomas 137 Thankful 138 Zerviah

14

Edward Wooster, baptized at Milford 12 June 1670; died young.

15

David Wooster, of Derby, baptized at Milford 12 June 1670, died 29 March 1711. He married MARY LOBDELL, who died before 1723, daughter of Simon and Persis (?Pierce) of Milford, as is proved by New Haven Probate Records, vol. 4, p. 482. Children: 151 Jerusha 152 Persis 153 Tamar

16

Henry Wooster, born 18 August 1666 and baptized, with Ruth, at Milford 4 July 1669; died s.p., in her Majesty's service in the expedition to Canada, prior to an agreement of his heirs dated 9 February 1709/10.

17

Ruth Wooster, born 8 April 1668 and baptized, with Henry, at Milford 4 July 1669; married in 1687 SAMUEL BOWERS, baptized at New Haven 5 November 1665, died at Derby in 1744, son of Rev. John 2 (George 1) and Bridget (Thompson). He married (2) 4 November 1691 Lydia French, by whom he had six children. [KJW note: see a note from DLJ re John and re a mistakenly attributed other child of Ruth at the entry for John (No. 171).] Child: 171 John

18

Timothy Wooster, of Derby, was born 12 November 1670 and was baptized at Milford 18 December 1670. He married 23 May 1699, ANNA PERRY, born at Stratford 22 January 1679/80, daughter of Arthur and Anna (Judson). Children: 181 Timothy 182 Tabitha 183 Edward 184 Ann 185 Samuel 186 Damaris 187 Henry 188 Arthur 189 Eleazer 18A Peter

19

Captain Abraham Wooster, of Stratford, baptized at Milford 16 March 1672/3, died 1 September 174[3], aged 70 (gravestone in Episcopal churchyard, Stratford). He married 22 November 1699, MARY WALKER. In May 1717 he was appointed ensign and in May 1728 captain of the trainband in the parish of Ripton in Stratford. In his will, dated 31 August 1739 and proved 29 September 1743, he named his wife Mary, his sons Joseph and David, and his daughters Sarah Hemingway, Mary Harrison, Hannah Wooster, and Ann Wooster. Orcutt's "History of Derby" (p.782) states that Abraham Wooster resided at Stratford until about 1719, that he was living at Derby as early as 1722, and that he was still resident in Derby in July 1743, when he conveyed land to Abraham Wooster, Jr. A careful consideration of all the facts makes it certain that the deed of July 1743 was drawn by Abraham (No. 1B2), q.v., to the latter's nephew Abraham (No. 1B11), and the evidence is adequate to prove that Capt. Abraham Wooster, from the time of his marriage until his death, resided continuously at Stratford. As a result of Orcutt's mistake the subsequent biographies of Gen. David Wooster, son of Capt. Abraham, erroneously state that David spent his boyhood in Derby, and Dexter's "Yale Biographies" calls David son of Abraham of Derby. [DLJ note (inserted after "Children," and before "born at Stratford:" just below): Orcutt's History of Derby, p. 782, gives the date of Abraham Wooster's marriage as 1697 instead of 1699, and inserts a fictitious Abraham (whom it identifies with No. 1B2 of this article) as the eldest child. The correct date of marriage (1699) is given in Cothren's History of Woodbury, vol.3, p. 688, and the compiler of this article has personally verified it by reference to the original record. The Wooster Genealogy, p. 27, erroneously states that the eldest son was Abraham, born in 1698, and that the latter was father of Edward, born in 1734 (whom it identifies with No. 1833 of this article).] Children, born at Stratford: 191 Ruth 192 Joseph 193 Sarah 194 Mary 195 Hannah 196 David 197 Ann

1A

Hannah Wooster, baptized at Milford 31 October 1675; married 20 August 1696 WILLIAM WASHBURN, born at Stratford 16 Mar 1668/9, died at Derby 18 January 1741, son of Hope 2 (William 1) and Mary (Stiles). Seven children. Children: 1A1 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.] 1A2 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.] 1A3 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.] 1A4 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.] 1A5 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.] 1A6 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.] 1A7 [KJW note: Jacobus provided neither first name nor other data.]

1B

Sylvester Wooster,of Derby, died 16 November 1712. He married SUSANNA -------, who married secondly, 30 November 1713, Samuel Washburn [DLJ note: Susanna had two children by Samuel Washburn, viz., Mary and Samuel. The latter was born 4 May 1717, married 19 May 1741 Sarah Beach, and died in the military service 24 October 1760.] born at Stratford 5 March 1670/1, died at Derby in 1724, son of Hope and Mary (Stiles), and thirdly, in 1724, ------- Northrop. The probate records give the names and ages of Sylvester's children, early in 1714, as Moses, 13, Tabitha, 11, Samuel, 8, Nathaniel, 5, Sylvester, 2, and Susanna, 7 months. In February 1724 the widow was called Susanna Wooster alias Washborne, in December 1724 Susanna Northrop, lately Washborne. Children: 1B1 Moses 1B2 Abraham 1B3 Tabitha 1B4 Samuel 1B5 Nathaniel 1B6 Sylvester 1B7 Susanna

1C

Tabitha Wooster, married (1) at Stratford, 15 October 1705, JOHN WALKER; married (2) at Stratford, 11 October 1726, JOSEPH BIRDSEY.

1D

Lieutenant Jonas Wooster, of Stratford, where he resided in the parish of Ripton (afterwards the town of Huntington), married JANE NICHOLS, probably daughter of Benjamin of Stratford, of whose estate Jonas was administrator in 1719. In 1773 her three sons, John Wooster of Stratford, Jonas Wooster of Milford, and Benjamin Wooster of Litchfield, joined a large number of other Nichols heirs in a suit before the Superior Court for the recovery of certain lands. Jonas Wooster was confirmed as ensign of the trainband at ripton in May 1728 and as lieutenant of the same company in October 1740. He first bought land in Litchfield in 1731. His brother Timothy also acquired property there, which he conveyed in 1747 to his "sons Arthur and Peter," they in turn conveying it, in 1748, to their "uncle Lieutenant Jonah Wooster of Ripton in Stratford." Jonas conveyed his Litchfield property, 7 October 1752, to his "son Benjamin Wooster of Stratford," and Benjamin removed thither. [LDJ note: Litchfield Deeds, vol. 2, pp. 9, 160, 440, and vol. 4, pp. 237, 306, 446.] Children: 1D1 Jonas 1D2 John 1D3 Benjamin

1E

Ebenezer Wooster, of Stratford and Stamford, baptized at Milford 5 August 1688, is possibly the Ebenezer who died at Stamford in January 1765, the administratrix of whose estate was Mary Wooster. [KJW note: I have a very strong hunch that it was his son—1E3—who died in January 1765 and was survived by a widow Mary. N.B.—I am following that hunch, and I am listing Mary Pettit as the wife of 1E3 and NOT as the second wife of 1E.] He married MARGARET SAWTELL, daughter of Zechariah of Groton. He removed from Stratford to Stamford in 1717, conveying his property in Stratford to Jonas Wooster (Stratford Deeds, vol. 2, p. 431A). Children (record incomplete): 1E1 Henry 1E2 Zechariah 1E3 Ebenezer 1E4 John [KJW note: Check
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi/stamford/hr_t-z.htm for information about four additional children of Ebenezer and Margaret Sawtell (apparently born after move to Stamford), two children of Ebenezer (although WHICH Ebenezer—1E or 1E3—is not clear) and Mary Pettit, and more. The four additional children, added on the basis of the records found in the above link, follow.] 1E5 Anna Wooster, born Sept. 3, 1717 1E6 Edward Wooster, born Mar. 25, 1719 1E7 Thomas Wooster, born Dec.--, 1721 1E8 Mehetabel Wooster, born Mar. 26, 1723. ==3rd generation=====Grandchildren of Edward===================================

111

Elizabeth Johnson, b. 20 December 1672: died in 1757; married in 1692 JEREMIAH JOHNSON, b. at New Haven 25 April 1664, died at Derby 11 December 1726, son of Jeremiah 2 (Thomas 1) and Sarah (Hotchkiss).

131

Phebe Wooster, [DLJ note: Orcutt's History of Derby calls this child Phebe Leavenworth, and states that she died 26 March 1696. No such entry has been found in the Derby rcords.] born 6 March 1678/9; died after February 1762; married JOHN LEAVENWORTH of Newton, son of Thomas and Grace. For their children see REGISTER, vol. 72, p. 78.

132

Alice Wooster, born September 6 September 1680; died in September 1682.

133

Zerviah Wooster, born 19 August 1682; died 20 February 1697/8. [DLJ note: Orcutt's History of Derby erroneously states that she died 19 August 1682.]

134

Elizabeth Wooster, born 1 September 1685; married 27 March 1712 JOHN TOMLINSON, born 19 September 1686, died 18 November 1756, son of William. He married (2) Hannah (Merwin) Collins, widow of John Collins, who married (3) Samuel Sanford. By her John Tomlinson had two sons. Children: 1341 Phebe 1342 Bathsheba 1343 Joseph 1344 Elizabeth 1345 Abigail 1346 John

135

Alice Wooster, [DLJ note: Omitted in History of Derby and early accounts. Her marriage is proved by Derby Deeds, vol. 4, p. 350. Her estate was distributed to her brother Thomas Wooster, to the heirs of her eldest sister, Phebe Leavenworth, to the heirs of her second sister, Elizabeth Tomlinson, and to the heirs of her third sister, Zerviah Miles.] born about 1687; died s.p. 8 August 1774; married SAMUEL WOOSTER (No. 1B4). [KJW note: She appears to have been the second wife of Samuel Wooster.]

136

Thomas Wooster, of Derby, born 18 February 1691/2, died 2 February 1777, aged 85 (gravestone). He married 25 December 1718, SARAH HAWKINS, born 23 May 1695, died 10 December 1785, aged 92 [sic], daughter of Joseph 3 (Joseph 2, Robert 1) and Elizabeth (Gunn). Children: 1361 John 1362 Ruth 1363 Thomas 1364 Phebe 1365 Daniel 1366 Joseph 1367 David 1368 Henry

137

Thankful Wooster, born 18 February 1691/2.

138

Zerviah Wooster, [DLJ note: Omitted in History of Derby and subsequent accounts.] born about 1699; died 15 November 1753; married 4 April 1723 JONATHAN MILES, born about 1700, died 21 February 1784, son of Theophilus 3 (Samuel 2 Richard 1) and Bethia (?Pettit). Children: 1381 Bethia 1382 Theophilus 1383 Phebe 1384 Hannah 1385 Theophilus 1386 Bethia 1387 Zerviah 1388 Jonathan

151

Jerusha Wooster, born about 1702, died s.p. about 1785; married THOMAS MCDOWLAND. Administration on her estate was granted, 16 January 1786, to Simeon Bristol, in right of his wife, "who was ------- Brooks niece to the deceased" (New Haven Probate Records, vol 15, p. 14). [KJW note: The missing first name was probably "Mary." See record No. 1532.] She was married subsequent to May 1744, having been temporarily non compos mentis not long before that date.

152

Persis Wooster, born 30 May 1704; married 2 April 1724 EPHRAIM GILLET, born about 1698, died in 1748, son of Eliphal and Mary (Wheeler) of Milford. [DLJ note (just preceding the list of children): The first five and last two children are recorded at Derby, the sixth and seventh at Milford. The History of Derby and subsequent publications erroneously combine the twins David and Wooster into a single child, David Wooster. Derby Records contain a second, and palpably incorrect, entry of the birth of the fifth child, Mary, on 10 March 1726/7.] Children: 1521 Ephraim 1522 David (twin) 1523 Wooster (twin) 1524 Freelove 1525 Mary 1526 Jeremiah 1527 Jonathan 1528 Shadrack 1529 Joseph (twin) 152A Benjamin (twin)

153

Tamar Wooster, born 16 June 1707; died at Cheshire 7 October 1775; married 1734 CAPTAIN ENOS BROOKS, born 15 February 1707/8, died 22 September 1771, son of Thomas 2 (Henry 1) and Martha (Hotchkiss) of Cheshire. Children: 1531 Enos 1532 Mary 1533 Mehitabel 1534 David 1535 Tamar

171

John Bowers, in 1714 had a wife Charity, recently married (New Haven County Court Records). [DLJ note: This child, John Bowers, is omitted in Orcutt's History of Derby, p. 703. Probate records prove that he was son of Samuel Bowers, and a consideration of the dates show that it is almost impossible for him to have been a child by the second wife. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol 31, p. 42, followed therein by Seymour Past and Present, p. 603, gives Ruth a fictitious child, Sarah Bowers, who (it is alleged) married Timothy Wooster (No. 181), q.v.]

181

Timothy Wooster, of Derby, was born 29 December 1699. He married first, 18 August 1727, ABIGAIL HARGER, born 2 July 1706, died 23 September 1736, daughter of Abraham 2 (Jabez 1) and Hannah (Riggs); and secondly, 22 March 1736/7, SARAH (CARRINGTON) BOWERS, born at New Haven 4 December 1708, died 23 October 1749, daughter of Peter and Anna (Wilmot) Carrington and window of Samuel Bowers. [DLJ note: Her only child by Samuel Bowers was Rebecca, born 8 July 1729, who married Robert Hawkins (No. 1862). The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. 31, p. 42, erroneously states that Timothy's second wife was Sarah Bowers, only child of Samuel and Ruth (Wooster). Cf. supra No. 17.] Children by first wife: 1811 Jabez 1812 Dorcas 1813 Abigail Children by second wife: 1814 Dorcas 1815 Edward 1816 Jesse 1817 Walter 1818 Jesse 1819 Joseph

182

Tabitha Wooster, born 3 May 1701. No subsequent record positively relating to her has been found, but an exhaustive study of all the Derby families leads to the belief that she was the Tabitha who married (1) ANTHONY WISEBURY and married (2) ------- BARTHOLOMEW.

183

Edward Wooster, of Derby, born 17 September 1702, died in 1732. He married at Stratford, 7 February 1723/4, ELIZABETH WATKINS, born in August 1702, died 2 March 1738, daughter of Joseph. [DLJ note: On 29 August 1727 Edward Wooster and his wife Elizabeth conveyed land inherited from "father Joseph Watkins Sr." (Stratford Deeds, vol. 4, p. 92.)] She married secondly Thomas Harvey of Fairfield, and the births of her children Naomi and Edward are entered in the register of the Greenfield Hill Parish. Children: 1831 Naomi 1832 Grace 1833 Edward

184

Ann Wooster, born 17 January 1704/5; died before 1748; married (1) 6 January 1725/6 DANIEL HAWKINS, born 9 [obliterated] 1705, died before 1732, son of Joseph 3 (Joseph 2, Robert 1) and Elizabeth (Gunn); married (2) ROGER PERKINS, born at New Haven 25 March 1704, died at Derby in 1751, son of John 3 (John 2, Edward 1) and Sarah (Warner). He married (2) Mary -------, who died at Oxford 2 July 1789. Child by first husband: 1841 Daniel [DLJ note: Roger Perkins had two children by his second wife, Mary, viz., Sarah (born in 1748) and Eunice (born in 1749). The diary of a grandson of Roger is said to contain the statement that Roger's first wife was Ann, daughter of Ithiel Russell. This is disproved by several records, including a deed from Timothy Wooster to his son-in-law Roger Perkins (Derby Deeds, vol. 5, p. 510).] Children by second husband: 1842 Ithiel 1843 Mary 1844 Anna 1845 Damaris 1846 Ann

185

Samuel Wooster, of Oxford, born 17 April 1706, died 16 September 1776, aged 70 (gravestone). He married, 28 October 1731, ANN MOSS, who died 14 September 1791, [DLJ note: By church record 17 September 1790. Administration of her estate was granted 29m September 1790.] aged 81 (gravestone), daughter of William 3 (Mercy 2, John 1). [DLJ note: The Morse genealogy, by J. Howard Morse and Emily W. Leavitt (New York, 1903), Part I, Section 5, p. 12, correctly places Ann as daughter of Sergt. William Moss, but gives her birth date as 28 October 1731, this being actually the date of her marriage. Her age at death would place her birth four years prior to her father's marriage to Abigail (Nichols) Riggs, and it is practically certain that she was his child by a former wife, whose identity has not been discovered.] Children: 1851 Elisha 1852 Deborah 1853 Ann 1854 Joseph 1855 Hannah 1856 Micah 1857 Eunice 1858 Sarah

186

Damaris Wooster, born 20 February 1707/8; married (1) 13 December 1727 ELEAZER HAWKINS, born 27 November 1706, died in 1734, son of Joseph 3 (Joseph 2, Robert 1) and Elizabeth (Gunn); married (2) before 1743, as his second wife, NOAH DURAND, born 27 August 1707, son of John and Elizabeth (Bryan). Children by first husband: 1861 Lois 1862 Robert 1863 Lieut. Samuel 1864 Zadoc Children by second husband: 1865 Noah 1866 Abigail 1867 Mercy

187

Henry Wooster, born 19 February 1709/10. His son, Henry, was living in 1801. [DLJ note: Nathan Wooster's estate (excepting dower) was distributed in 1810 to his surviving first cousins on both sides. Those mentioned on his father's side were: (1) Walter, son of Timothy Wooster; (2) Aner and Naomi, daughter's of Eleazer Wooster; (3) Joseph, Anna, and Sarah, children of Samuel Wooster; (4) Henry, son of Henry Wooster; (5) Robert and Lois, children of Damaris Durand by her first marriage, she being then Damaris Hawkins, and Abigail, Mercy, and Noah, children of Damaris Durand by her second marriage; (6) children (unnamed) of Anna Perkins. (New Haven Probate Records, vol. 27, p. 167.)] [KJW note: The Nathan Wooster referred to is No. 1882. Jacobus included two markers leading to this footnote. One was from Henry (No. 187), and the other was from Nathan (No. 1882). I suspect the marker from Henry may not have been intended.]

188

Arthur Wooster, born 26 March 1713; died at Oxford 6 August 1796; married SARAH BALDWIN, who died 12 July 1796, daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth. He was appointed ensign of Capt. Elihu Hall's company in the expedition against Canada in June 1746. Children: 1881 a son 1882 Nathan

189

Eleazer Wooster, born 16 October 1715; died at Bethlehem 12 September 1807, aged 94 [sic]; married DEBORAH -------. He and his wife, Deborah, were dismissed from the church in Oxford to the church in Goshen in 1770. Children, recorded at Oxford: 1891 Lurana 1892 Naomi

Peter Wooster, of Oxford, died about 1760; married MARTHA SMITH, who died 1 February 1804, having married (2) 3 September 1767 Ezekiel Perry. Peter Wooster served in the French and Indian War, being corporal of the Seventh Company, Fourth Connecticut Regiment, from 12 September to 19 October 1755, sergeant of the same company from 19 October 1755, and ensign of the Fourth Company, Second Regiment, in 1758. He was wounded, scalped, and left for dead on 8 August 1758. [DLJ note: He was granted £40 by the Connecticut Assembly as recompense for injuries received at the battle of Wood Creek, when six musket balls were shot through him, and, in addition to receiving nine blows to the head with a hatchet, he was scalped and stripped.] He was second lieutenant of the Eleventh Company, Second Regiment, in 1759, and first lieutenant of the First Company, Third Regiment in 1760. In his will, dated 6 July 1759, and proved in January 1761, he names his wife Martha and his brothers Arthur and Eleazer. In 1767 Ezekiel Perry was appointed guardian to Peter Wooster's daughter Martha. Child: 18A1 Martha

Colonel Joseph Wooster, of Stratford, born at Stratford 16 January 1702/3, died 30 December 1791, aged 89 (gravestone in Episcopal churchyard). He married in December 1751, LUCY NICHOLS, who died 18 October 1760, aged 32 (ib.), daughter of Theophilus and Sarah (Curtis). He was appointed lieutenant of the troop of the Fourth Regiment in May 1743, captain in May 1744, served as captain of company of foot in the expedition against Canada, in June 1746, was appointed major of the Third Regiment for the expedition against Crown Point, in August 1755, and served as deputy for Stratford at two terms of the Connecticut Assembly, being then called colonel. [DLJ note: The Wooster Genealogy erroneously states (p. 40) that Joseph Wooster (No. 192) had sons Abel and David. The New york Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. 31, p. 39, following an erroneous suggestion made in Orcutt's History of Stratford, states that Joseph by a former marriage had a son Benjamin, who married Ann Judson. This Benjamin (No. 136) was in reality a son of Jonas Wooster (No. 1E), q.v.] Child: 1921 Col. Joseph Lucius

General David Wooster, of New Haven, B.A. (Yale, 1738), M.A. (ib., 1741) born at Stratford 2 March 1710/11, died at Danbury 2 May 1777, aged 66 (gravestone), of wounds received near Ridgefield. He married, 6 March 1745/6, MARY CLAP, born at Windham 25 April 1729, died 6 June 1807, aged 78 (gravestone), daughter of Thomas Clap, A.B. (Harvard, 1722), A.M. (ib., 1725), President of Yale College, 1740-1766, and wife Mary (Whiting). In 1745 he was captain of a militia company that served at Cape Breton. Going to England with a batch of prisoners, he received a commission as captain in the British Regular Army. Having become imbued while abroad with the principles of Freemasonry, in 1750 he organized the first lodge of Freemasons in Connecticut. In 1756 he served as colonel of the Second Connecticut Regiment in the expedition against Crown Point, in 1757 as deputy to the Assembly, and from 1758 to 1760 with the militia again. Thereafter he occupied himself with mercantile pursuits, and was appointed collector of customs for the port of New Haven. At the outbreak of the War of the revolution he was commissioned major general of the Connecticut Militia, and in June 1775 ranked third among the eight brigadier generals appointed by the Continental Congress. After seeing active service in the campaign against Canada, he resigned his federal commission and was appointed, in October 1776, major general and commander in chief of the Connecticut Militia. At the burning of Danbury he went to the relief of that town with inferior forces, and was mortally wounded on 27 April 1777. He died insolvent, having paid his troops with his personal funds; and the destruction of his papers by the British in July 1779 made it impossible for his family to recover the sums which he had advanced. Children: 1961 Mary 1962 Thomas 1963 Mary 1964 Mary

Ann Wooster, married CORPORAL THOMAS ROBINSON of East Haven, born 7 April 1723, died in the military service 16 October 1760, son of Thomas 2 (Jacob 1) and Hannah (Howe). Thomas Robinson Anna Harrison, states that he married Anna Wooster, and assigns to him eight children who were actually the children of his uncle, Eliakim Robinson.] Children: 1971 Abraham 1972 Hannah 1973 David

Moses Wooster, of Derby, born about 1701, died prior to 5 October 1741, when administration on his estate was granted to his widow Mary, who was appointed guardian to the six younger children. He married, 5 April 1720, MARY HAWKINS, born 1 April 1700, daughter of Joseph 3 (Joseph 2, Robert 1) and Elizabeth (Gunn). She married secondly, 28 October 1744, Lieutenant Samuel Knowles of Southbury, born 30 April 1691, died 8 March 1772. Children: 1B11 Abraham 1B12 Abigail 1B13 Rachel 1B14 Miriam 1B15 Moses 1B16 Henry 1B17 Elijah

1B2

Abraham Wooster, [DLJ note: His name is omitted in the above-mentioned (in the entry for his father, Sylevester, No. 1B) probate list, presumably through an oversight. His parentage, though not conclusively proved, is indicated by several deeds. On 16 March 1731 Moses, Abraham and Nathaniael Wooster of Derby conveyed undivided land, of which Moses owned a two-sevenths share, Abraham a one-seventh share, and Nathaniel a one-seventh share (Derby Deeds, vol. 4, p. 36). On 16 July 1743 Abraham Wooster of Derby conveyed to Abraham Wooster, Junior of said Derby now resident in Stratford land at Quaker Farms (Oxford) "laid out on ye List of Silvester Late of said Derby Deceased" (Derby Deeds, vol. 5, p. 52). On 18 January 1748 Abraham Wooster of Waterbury conveyed land at Quaker Farms "Laid out in ye Right of Silvester Wooster Deceased and was Samuel Woosters Deceased his part of said Land and bought by me of said Wooster" (Derby Deeds, vol. 5, p. 422)], of Derby, born about 1702, removed to Waterbury between 1743 and 1748. He married MARTHA HULL, [DLJ note: Abraham and Martha Wooster of Waterbury joined with other Hull heirs in 1754 in conveying land "distributed to us from the estate of our late brother John Hull of Derby deceased" (Derby Deeds, vol. 6, p. 305). The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. 31, p. 39, erroneously states that Abraham married (1) Sarah Marchant and (2) Martha Hull.], born in 1698, daughter of John 3 (John 2, Richard 1) and Mary (Merwin). Children, born at Derby: 1B21 Wait 1B22 Mary 1B23 Hinman 1B24 Miles 1B25 Abraham

1B4

Samuel Wooster, born about 1706; died before 1748; married (1) 22 May 1725 HANNAH JOHNSON, [DLJ note: Her brother, John Johnson, dying without issue, his estate was distributed in 1767 to his brothers and sisters or their heirs, including Sarah Chatfield, daughter of his sister Hannah Wooster (Fairfield Probate Records, vol. 18, p. 45)], born at Stratford 3 April 1699, daughter of George and Hannah (Dorman); married (2) ALICE WOOSTER (No. 135). Child by first wife: 1B41 Sarah

1B5

Nathaniel Wooster, of Oxford, born about 1709, died in 1779. He married MARGARET KIRBY, [DLJ note: Her identity is proved by probate records and by deeds to Plumb land in Milford. In Seymour Past and Present, p. 604, she is erroneously called Margaret Harger.] who died about 1780, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Plumb). In his will, dated 13 January 1779 and proved in May 1779, Nathaniel Wooster named his wife Margit, his sons Samuel and Abel, and his daughters Susannah Davis (and her child Susannah Pattah), Lois Perkins, and Ester Gordon. The estate was insolvent, Reuben Perkins, Wm. Gordon, and John Cornish being among the creditors. The estate of Margaret Wooster was distributed in 1780 to Samuel, Abel, and Sylvester Wooster, Hester Gordon, Susannah Cornish, and Lois Perkins. In May 1747 he was convicted with Samuel Weed and Daniel Tucker, of "counterfeiting the bills of publick credit in this Colony," the penalty being corporal punishment and the forfeiture of his entire estate. 1D1

Jonas Wooster, tailor, born 6 January 1716 [?1715/1716]; died at Washington after 1785; [DLJ note: Probably in 1795. Milford Deeds call Jonas of Milford in 1781 but of Washington in 1784 and 1785. The Washington records published in Cothren's History of Woodbury, vol. 3, give the death of a John Wooster in 1795. Jonas is the only Wooster known to have resided at Washington at that time, and it is likely that this "John" is a misprint or misreading of the name "Jonas."] married ABIGAIL NEWTON, born about 1712 and baptized at Milford 16 September 1716, died at Washington 20 October 1798, daughter of Ezekiel and Abigail (Briscoe). He settled in Milford prior to 3 January 1737/8, when he purchased property there. Child: 1D11 Abigail

John Wooster, of Huntington, born 27 January 1721/2, died in 1797. He married, 9 November 1752, ABIGAIL BLACKMAN, who died in 1811, aged 82. [DLJ note: This branch has not been traced further. The grandchildren of John (No. 1D2) Wooster were baptized at the Congregational Church, Huntington. As the records of this church have not appeared in print, these baptisms, prior to 1800, are given in the text. The births of a few of the grandchildren were recorded at Stratford and may be found in Orcutt's history of that town.] Children, recorded at Stratford: 1D21 Joseph 1D22 Ephraim 1D23 Nathan 1D24 Abigail 1D25 Elam 1D26 John

1E1

Henry Wooster, born 27 May 1712; married SARAH WATERBURY. [DLJ note: The compiler regrets that he has been unable to inspect the deeds and probate records of this branch of the family. Henry (No. 1E1) and his brothers (Nos. 1E2, 1E3, & 1E4) probably had more children then appear in the text. A Henry Wooster served in 1762 as a private under Captain Hait of Stamford. Stamford Registration, by E. B. Huntington (Stamford, 1874), p. 137, gives the family of an Ebenezer Wooster who died 10 July 1802. He married 15 November 1789 ELIZABETH WATERBURY, and had children born as follows: John W., born 1 July 1790; James, 3 June 1792; Ebenezer, 29 March 1794; Henry, 15 January 1796; Mary, 14 August 1798 (died 29 July 1799).] Child: 1E11 William born March 5, 1749-1750.

Zechariah Wooster, born 17 March 1713/14; died 27 June 1715.

1E3

Ebenezer Wooster, born 5 January 1715/16. [KJW note: From the Stamford Registration, by E. B. Huntington--- "EBENEZER Wooster and Mary Pettit were married on Nov. 22, 1748 Ebenezer Wooster, born June 13, 1750 Ebenezer Wooster, born Aug. 24, 1753. EBENEZER Wooster died Jan. --, 1765." ---Apparently Jacobus could not find deeds and probate records to satisfy himself that this man was actually the son of 1E. I am less demanding. Also, if these are two different children, both belonging to this couple, then it would appear that the first did not survive. If that is the case, Eugene R. Wooster has mistakenly confused these two children and has listed his #134 on page 34 with an incorrect birth date. Rather than 1750 it should be 1753.] Children: 1E31 Ebenezer Wooster, born June 13, 1750 1E32 Ebenezer Wooster, born August 24, 1753

In the early part of the War of 1812 Charles W. Wooster was in command of the fortified posts around New York as Major of the Sea Fencibles. In 1819 the Chilean government made Lord Cochrane commander-in-chief of her navy, and Wooster, refusing to serve under him, resigned his commission; but, in 1822, when Lord Cochrane had left the Chilean service, Wooster again entered her navy with the rank of post captain, being promoted in 1829 to rear admiral. Lemuel Wooster, born at Derby 23 June 1760; of Canaan, N.Y. in 1790. [KJW note: Lemuel was baptized at St. James's Church in Derby, 10 August 1760. The Records of the Rev. Gideon Bostwick indicate that in New Concord, N.Y. on 9 November 1785 he baptized Lydia, a daughter of Lemuel Wooster and his wife, SARA -------. On the basis of the data in the 1800 census I am listing an additional five children (names unknown). I strongly suspect that the two sons, No. 1B1512 and No. 1B1514, were John Wooster and Samuel Wooster who were counted in the 1820 census in Guilford, Chenango County, N.Y. Each was in the 26 to 45 age bracket at that time. John Wooster was still in Guilford for the 1830 census, this time in the 40 to 50 age bracket. I am unaware of Samuel's whereabouts in 1830. Lemuel was counted in Guilford, Chenango County in 1830. There were three in the household: one male between 60 and 70 (Lemuel), one female between 60 and 70 (his wife?), and one female between 40 and 50 (their daughter, Lydia, who was born in 1785?). ] Children (Possibly an incomplete list): 1B1511 Lydia 1B1512 son 1B1513 daughter 1B1514 son 1B1515 daughter 1B1516 daughter

Ebenezer Wooster, baptized at St. James's Church, Derby, 29 September 1765. [KJW note: He appears in the 1790 census in Derby Town, New Haven County (page 98, line 27) with 2 males under 16 and 3 females in the household. In 1800, 1810, and 1820 he was counted in Columbia County, NY, each time with a large number of children in the household. His location in 1820 was the Town of Austerlitz. He was counted in the Town of McDonough in Chenango County, NY, in 1830. The Chenango County History reveals that he had a son Moses and that the name of Ebenezer's wife was Sarah MUNSON. It is probable that he was also the father of Leverett Lyman Wooster. On the basis of data in the census records of 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820, I am listing 14 children, eleven of them with names unknown. www.rootsweb.com/~nychen/guilfor3.htm indicates that Sarah died in Chenango County as a widow and 83 years old in March 1850, which implies Ebenezer died before 1850. It also says that she was born in Connecticut. The source seems to be the "vital records" section of the US 1850 census. The name for the son William comes from a letter held by the library at Norwich, New York.] Children (list may be incomplete, order may be incorrect): 1B1521 Leverett Lyman (born ca 1786) 1B1522 son (born before 1790, apparently died before 1800) 1B1523 daughter (born between 1785 and 1790) 1B1524 daughter (died before 1800) 1B1525 Moses (born 1793) 1B1526 son (born between 1795 and 1800) 1B1527 son (born between 1791 and 1800, apparently died before 1810) 1B1528 son (born between 1791 and 1800, apparently died before 1810) 1B1529 daughter (born between 1795 and 1800) 1B152A daughter (born between 1795 and 1800) 1B152B William (born 1805) 1B152C daughter (born between 1805 and 1810) 1B152D daughter (born between 1805 and 1810) 1B152E daughter (born between 1801 and 1810, apparently died before 1820)

1B153

Moses Wooster, of Canaan, N.Y., in 1790. [KJW note: In the 1790 census there are two Moses (Moses and Moses, Jr.) listed in Canaan. This is Moses, Jr. In 1800 there is only one household under the name of Moses Wooster. A check of the figures would suggest that in 1800 the two households had been consolidated into one. This (the younger) Moses appears to be the one in Columbia County in 1810, by which time his father must have been dead. He must also be the one in Smithville, Chenango Co., NY in 1830. The preceding statement needs to be checked. I cannot locate a record at the moment.]

1B154

Mindwell Wooster, baptized at St. James's Church, Great Barrington, Massachusetts, 1 July 1776. [KJW note: The Records of Rev. Gideon Bostwick of St. James's Church, who "rode the circuit" indicate that this baptism actually took place in New Concord, N.Y.]

1B155

Charity Wooster, baptized at St. James's Church, Great Barrington, Massachusetts, 12 January 1772. [KJW note: The Records of Rev. Gideon Bostwick of St. James's Church, who "rode the circuit" indicate that this baptism actually took place in New Concord, N.Y.]

1B156

Levi Wooster, baptized in New Concord, N.Y., 21 November 1773 by the Rev. Gideon Bostwick of St. James's Church, Great Barrington, Massachusetts. [KJW note: Jacobus somehow overlooked Levi and omitted him from his compilation. The record of the baptism is in Bostwick'd records. I added this record. It is not in Jacobus. Levi is counted in the Town of Austerlitz in Columbia County, NY, in 1810 and 1820, and he is probably the Levi that is counted in Marcellus, Onondaga County, NY, in 1830.]

1B157

Charity Wooster, baptized at St. James's Church, Derby, 1 March 1778. [KJW note: Jacobus did not include this second Charity in the list of children. Instead, he added the note which immediately follows this one.] [DLJ note: Another child was probably Charity, bapt. at St. James's Church, Derby, 1 Mar. 1778, a record which would imply that Moses returned from New Concord to Derby before settling in Canaan, N.Y.]
