The foraging ecology of this species
has not been studied. The insect occurs in Mexico where it feeds
on Guava and Oak. The larvae may reach a length in excess of 7cm
and are among the largest of the social caterpillars. The caterpillars
make large and conspi
cuous nests that may reach a length of 40-50 cm.
Silk collected from these nest was used by the indigenous peoples.
In sensitive people, the larvae can cause a rash or skin necrosis when
handled.
